A Biography of Profe

Gilberto Aguirre was born in Camoapa, Boaco on December 25, 1944. He grew up in Managua, raised by his mother, Carmen. He attended the Baptist school for his elementary and secondary education, graduating in 1962. He began working as a math and physics teacher at the Baptist school while studying at the UNAN University in Managua, where he graduated with a degree in educational sciences, specializing in math and physics. Gilberto continued to work as a teacher in different schools until 1972, when the earthquake destroyed Managua. He started volunteering then with CEPAD, since its founding. From 1973-1980, he worked as the Program Director. In 1977, he studied at Western Michigan University where he obtained his Masters in Educational Leadership. From September of 1980 until March of 2001, Profe worked as CEPAD’s Executive Director. During this time, there was the war, which had been financed by the US government, when many church leaders fled the country to avoid persecution. It was also the period of time when there was displacement of the Miskito people on the Caribbean Coast, but there was also CEPAD’s work in mediation and reconciliation between the Sandinista government and conflict groups. CEPAD played a fundamental role as a voice for the Evangelical Church and the government, ensuring that pastors and seminary students were exempt from their military service. And when the Peace Commissions started their work in Nueva Guinea to mediate on the Atlantic Coast, Profe represented CEPAD alongside Dr. Gustavo Parajón and many pastors and church leaders. After his renunciation in December of 2000, CEPAD’s Board of Directors, asked Profe to stay on as Program Director. Profe then became the Director of Development and the Director of Radio CEPAD. Profe also participated on boards of other organizations throughout his life. At the time of his passing, he was a father to one daughter and three sons, and had eight grandchildren. He was also married to Dámaris Albuquerque. Profe Gilberto Aguirre has played an important role in CEPAD since its founding, and his dedication of 48 years to this ministry, will always be remembered. We will always remember Profe as a dear friend, passionate leader, and dedicated disciple.
