New Land brings New Life

Roger lives in a rural village of Nicaragua, working hard to make ends meet for his three children and six grandchildren. Roger has had to travel into the nearest city to find work as a security guard in order to afford even the most basic food items.

Roger was chosen by his community’s development committee to be a disciple farmer. A neighbor who is attending CEPAD’s Food Security and Care for the Environment workshops replicates what he’s learned with Roger.

Roger’s 3 acres were previously abandoned, but Roger has worked to transform them. Now Roger works for 4 days as a security guard, but dedicates 3 days each week to his farm. Roger dreams of producing more fruit, sharing his produce with those in his community who are in need, and taking care of his family.

Even though Roger started implementing the practices he learned just less than a year ago, he now has 8 different crops he’s harvesting, some of which include basic food items like corn, beans, and rice. Roger doesn’t have to travel into the city to purchase these goods anymore.

“Now I have food guaranteed to last us the whole season. It’s a huge success for us to eat what we produce in our own community. I am able to save 1,500 Cordobas (USD $42) each month, 18,000 Cordobas (USD $500) each year.”

By making the decision to learn from his neighbor and work on his land, Roger is able to start a new life, one that will benefit him and his family.

Roger shares his thanks with CEPAD donors:

“CEPAD is unique, unlike any other. What they promise, they provide. May God continue to bless them and their donors, and may they work for many more years helping the most humble families.”
