Leaving a Legacy
Francisco, a single dad, has faced many struggles in the past years. His farm was no longer producing as it was due to climate change, but he needed to find a way to provide for his family.
“In the community where I live, we primarily work farming basic grains. It hasn’t been easy in the last few years. Our harvest cycles are changing. This year, there was very little rain, and our rivers are drying up. I’ve had to migrate to Costa Rica, our neighboring country, to work during harvest time. I had to leave my family to make a little bit of money so that we could farm our land.”
In CEPAD’s Sustainable Agriculture Program, Francisco learned how to use local resources to make is own organic compost and insecticide to improve his soil quality. Francisco also received fruit and forest trees, vegetables seeds, and other plants to help diversify his crops.
Francisco’s outlook on life is now much more positive.
“I no longer see the need to leave Nicaragua to get by, but rather fight to leave an inheritance for my children on the farm.”
This is the core of CEPAD’s work – creating generational change and empowering families to break the cycle of hunger and poverty. Francisco is breaking that cycle for his children.
Thank YOU for helping Francisco and his family. To provide other rural farmers with the same opportunities, you can join us here.
