Finding Freedom | Grethel’s story

Grethel suffered abuse from her husband for a long time before she was able to find help. She is just one of the people who have been assisted by those in CEPAD’s youth leadership program.

“I returned to my community with my three kids, abandoned by my husband who left me to go to Costa Rica with another woman. I felt deceived and without strength to go on living. I was worried about how I would support my kids. Someone mentioned to me that there was a group of youth leaders that helped provide counsel to families going through a difficult time.

I went to them, and they listened to me. I felt better and more relaxed knowing that I had hope to move forward. They suggested that if my husband returned, I should speak with him and read the law with him to figure out his rights. But when he returned, I forgave him.

It wasn’t until he hit me and left marks on my body, scarring my leg from where I had to get five stitches, that I kicked him out.

Thanks be to God that I can now say I am a free woman. I don’t have problems with abuse, and I can feel peace in my own home where there is no more yelling, which used to be daily present; there wasn’t peace. But today, we can enjoy a peace and happiness, even if we only have beans to eat, because love lives here and there is no more fear.”

We’re so proud of Grethel for the strength she expressed in paving a new pathway for her and her children, as well as the youth leaders who continue to walk alongside Grethel and encourage her.

“They invited me to be a multiplier in the youth leadership program, where I now learn about psychology and how to share my story in the workshops.”

Grethel is now able to walk alongside other women who may find themselves in a similar situation and help them find their own freedom.

“I give thanks to God for these mental health workshops that allow us to open our eyes, and recognize the damages that men have done to us that we’re always putting up with. We used to believe that we couldn’t make it without them or care for our children. Now I can share the message with every woman that they don’t need to put up with mistreatment or be a slave to physical or mental abuse.”

Thank YOU for helping Grethel regain her freedom and set an example for her three children. To partner with CEPAD and provide more families with the opportunity to pave a new path, give here.
