Empowering the Next Generation
Nicaragua’s population is fairly young, with 52% being under 30 years old, and the difficulties they face are worrying. Violence, alcoholism, drug addiction, teen pregnancy, dropping out of school, and bullying are just some of the themes those in CEPAD’s Youth Leadership Program are learning to prevent.
Douglas is one of the 141 youth leaders across Nicaragua working in his community, and wants to share his experience.
I’ve received trainings over the past two years, where I’ve learned new things and very useful tools to help me serve my community. The program has provided us with workshops to help us be better citizens, contributing good principles and values to society.
Douglas, only 23 himself, is dedicated to his university studies and helping his parents with what little they farm. Now in the program, he takes time to study the materials he receives in CEPAD workshops to learn new techniques and work with the other two youth leaders in his community to host activities for other youth.
Personally, I feel more confident in giving advice to those around me. There are a lot of young people that need some advice or a helping hand with the difficulties we face. Now, we’re better prepared to face whatever challenge may come.
Thanks to Douglas and the other youth leaders across Nicaragua, the next generation has some good role models to look up to and a listening ear to reach out to should they need it.
