A Farm Destroyed

From top to bottom:

– Pablo and community members watching the flooding destroy their homes.

– Pablo’s land after the hurricane had passed.

– Pablo and his family’s temporary shelter.

– Pablo and his family desperate for a solution.

Category 1 hurricane Julia passed through Nicaragua in October and destroyed many farmlands and homes. Pablo is just one of the farmers whose family was affected. Everything they’ve worked so hard for over the past few years was destroyed overnight.

Pablo lost 70% of his crops, which included onion, tomatoes, beans, and other items for his family to live off of. They also lost all of their chickens.

“In my whole life I’ve never experienced something like this, waiting for the November harvest and not having anything. It’s sad to see the nature destroyed. We are without food and have lost everything we’ve invested in a few hours.”

More than just crops, Pablo’s family has lost their home and no longer have reliable shelter. While they have received some help from CEPAD through a food package which will last 20 days, and were provided a temporary shelter, there is still so much they will need to overcome.

Pablo and his family will need more food, medication, and clean water to drink. All the rain has contaminated the wells. Pablo’s son, Gabriel, is disabled and cannot walk. He was barely able to survive the horrors of the hurricane due to some neighbors helping to carry him.

CEPAD is trying to attend to these families most affected through food packages, roofing materials, water filters, and more, but we cannot do it alone. We need your help. Please give today.
