Healing Harvest
After suffering a family tragedy, Jasmina has tried to find healing around her.
“Seven years ago, my son, who was 12 years old, died in a vehicle accident. It was really hard for me, and since then, I try to participate in different community activities so that I don’t have to remember the hole in my heart.”
When CEPAD was invited to her community, Jasmina saw a new opportunity to get involved.
“CEPAD came after an invitation from the community, and I learned all bout the different programs. The Family Gardening Program caught my attention because it meant I could produce food for my family with earth-friendly techniques. In the beginning, I didn’t think it would be possible since the space around my house is very rocky; however, I’ve been able to improve my soil by incorporating organic material: wet soil, sand, cow manure, ashes, etc. These new techniques are something we’ve learned in the program; the Lord has blessed us with CEPAD.”
After improving her soil, Jasmina received seeds for tomatoes, peppers, onions, cabbage, carrots, squash, cucumbers, radish, pineapple, and yucca. Working the earth using organic techniques, Jasmina feels a sense of purpose. Going through CEPAD’s program with other women from her community has built new relationships and even strengthened old ones.
“I can contribute more to my family’s income while producing vegetables for us to eat. I feel useful with my new knowledge and can serve my family and neighbors, who are impressed with my garden’s results. I’m able to share what I’ve learned with neighbors and others in my community, even some who have family members in difficult situations.”
Lastly, Jasmina shares how she feels after being in the program for a few years.
“Praise God that we have something to eat every day! I feel proud of the new knowledge and successes I’ve had in these years.”
We can’t wait to see how Jasmina’s garden continues to grow and pray that she is able to find some healing in her new role as a gardener. To provide more women with the same opportunity as Jasmina, join us here to help mothers, daughters, and sisters a chance to lift their families out of poverty.
